The Coldstream Guards have been transferred authority for the British sector of the Green Line buffer zone in Cyprus.

A simple handover ceremony marks the official start of Op Tosca 43, the United Kingdom's permanent contribution to the long-running peacekeeping mission.

About 223 guardsmen and officers from the historic regiment will be based in the divided capital Nicosia, bolstering the United Nations' 800 personnel.

The Coldstream Guards replaced 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, which comprised a mixture of mostly reserve units.

"The Coldstream Guards are proud to have taken over responsibility for Op Tosca, maintaining the UN buffer zone in Cyprus," said Lieutenant Guy Tillson.

"We have assumed the role from 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and will continue their work for the United Nations."

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus started in 1964, 61 years ago, but was extended after the Turkish invasion of the island.

The Coldstream Guards are in Cyprus during the 375th anniversary of their formation.

Alongside daily duties patrolling the buffer zone, the normal processes of the British Army continue, one of which was a promotion parade for junior soldiers.

Lt Tillson said: "The promotion parade was an important moment for the Coldstream Guards, recognising the hard work and leadership shown by our junior Non-Commissioned Officers.

"It is always a privilege to see guardsmen and lance corporals take the next step in their careers."

The Coldstream Guards will spend six months in Cyprus working alongside international units of the United Nations.
