Military takes on ceremonial role as King's speech marks start of new parliamentary session
The King has said the UK faces an "increasingly dangerous and volatile world" in a speech marking the state opening of Parliament and the beginning of a new parliamentary session.
The King was accompanied by a Sovereign's Escort of the Household Cavalry as he travelled in the Irish State Coach from Buckingham Palace to the House of Lords.
Dressed in his Admiral of the Fleet Royal Naval Number 1 Dress with cap and sword, he delivered the speech penned by the Government and setting out its priorities for the weeks and months ahead.

More than 1,200 members of Armed Forces personnel took part in ceremonial tasks across the capital to mark the state opening.
These included 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, who provided a large Guard of Honour at Buckingham Palace commanded by Major Ben Tracey, General Officer Commanding London District and the Household Division.
