Challenger 2: The Ultimate Tank
The Challenger 2 tank is, to many, an iconic part of the British Armed Forces.
It has had a long and versatile life with the Ministry Of Defence planning to keep the tank in service until 2035.
Challenger 2 entered service with the British Army in June 1998 seeing operational service in Kosovo and Bosnia.
The tank entered service 15 years after it's predecessor, the Challenger 1, which entered in 1983.
One interesting fact is that the only time the tank has ever been seriously damaged during operations was by another Challenger 2 in a friendly fire incident.
The Challenger 2 has a 12-cylinder diesel engine and a gearbox with six forward and two reverse gears.
The Challenger 1 is currently used by the Royal Jordanian Army, although it has been heavily modified.
Although they share a similar name and appearance, the Challenger 2 and Challenger 1 have very few parts in common.
Despite its age, the Challenger 2 tank has been a vital tool for use by the British Armed Forces.
