
Change of command at PJHQ as the new Chief of Joint Operations is welcomed

Lieutenant General Charlie Stickland has wished the "best of luck" to his successor as he steps down as the Chief of Joint Operations (CJO).
In charge of overseeing the delivery of military objectives for overseas operations and exercises, Lt Gen Stickland said he was "privileged to have led the amazing PJHQ (Permanent Joint Headquarters) Group".
His successor will be Lieutenant General Nick Perry, who most recently served as Assistant Chief of the General Staff between 2021 and 2022.
Lt Gen Stickland added in a post on X, that he was thankful to the "extraordinary people at home and around the globe".
"They add value at every turn! #Humbling."
Lt Gen Stickland, who joined the Royal Marines in 1987, was appointed CJO in November 2021 and was responsible for the command and integration of UK global operations.
He previously served as Assistant Chief of Defence Staff for Operations & Commitments in the MOD in May 2019 and was intimately involved in all UK Resilience and overseas operations, notably the national COVID response and Operation Pitting, the UK's extraction from Afghanistan.
Successor
Lt Gen Perry was commissioned into the Royal Hussars on 12 September 1992 and boasts a wealth of experience.
He was awarded a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order for his service in Afghanistan in 2008, and a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his service in Afghanistan in 2010.
In 2010, after serving as Chief of Staff for Task Force Helmand and commanding the 22 SAS Regiment in 2012, he became military advisor to the then Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015.
Later, Lt Gen Perry would go on to be commander of 16 Air Assault Brigade in 2017, before taking up the role of Assistant CGS in March 2021.
PJHQ, part of Strategic Command, is based in Northwood and commands joint and multinational military operations on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.
Headed by CJO, its responsibilities include:
- Planning, executing and integrating UK-led joint and multinational overseas military operations
- Commanding UK Forces which have been assigned to multinational operations led by others
- Providing policy-aware military advice to the Ministry of Defence (MOD)
- Directing and overseeing Standing Joint Force HQ, Joint Force HQ and the Standing Joint Force Logistics Command
'Incredible privilege'
Lt Gen Perry said on X: "What an incredible privilege it is to command such a prestigious HQ.
"My deepest respect to Lt Gen Stickland for his unwavering commitment to Defence Ops, and his steadfast leadership through some incredible and testing times for UK Defence.
"Thank you for a great handover!"
