New Gurkha Recruits Graduate From Catterick

The British Army has welcomed into the fold its newest recruits from Nepal.

226 young Gurkha soldiers graduated from their infantryman training after 9 hard months.

The history of the service of the Brigade of Gurkhas goes back as far as 1815. Since then the Brigade has conducted itself with distinction during numerous conflicts worldwide with a staggering 46,000 Gurkhas dying while fighting for the British Crown.

The Brigade still maintains a battalion in Brunei and plays a full part in the British Army's operational deployments worldwide - currently, in Afghanistan.

New Gurkha Recruits Graduate From Catterick

The major units of the Brigade today are The Royal Gurkha Rifles (pictured above), The Queen's Gurkha Engineers, Queen's Gurkha Signals, and The Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment.

Among the most famous of their number is Lance Corporal Tuljung Gurung. He was awarded the Military Cross after fighting off a number of Taliban insurgents while serving in Afghanistan, armed with nothing but his Kukri dagger, read all about his story and see the blade itself here.
