New NATO Formation Launched in Germany

A new NATO formation has been launched in Grafenwoehr in south Germany.

Allied Land Command, a multi-national formation which is normally based at Izmir in Turkey, has been formally certified after a training scenario in which it directed three large NATO forces in a so-called Article Five action – defending an Alliance member from attack.

It controlled thousands of virtual troops to repel a simulated attack on Estonia, at the American Forces' Grafenwoehr training facility in Bavaria.

There has not been an exercise like this since the Cold War and it comes amid continuing tension with Russia over its annexation of Crimea and suspected involvement in the Ukraine conflict.

Rob Olver spoke to Allied Land Command's Deputy Commander, Lt Gen Ed Davis RM, about the developments.
