On Point With 1 LANCS
The sun rises on the Episkopi training area, and a group of pretend jihadists have set up a training camp in a hidden valley.
It's the job of Corunna Company to move forward to clear it of enemies.
Each of 1 LANCS rifle companies spend six weeks as the battalion’s lead company.
In the case of Corunna, it means they have 108 men on standby to go anywhere in the world at very short notice.
This week-long exercise aims to test their readiness by challenging them with scenarios they could well face for real.

These include capturing or killing terrorists, and dealing with an ambush by laying down a suppressing fire.
Major Richard Hill, Commander of Corunna Company, described what his troops were going though:
"The training state here in Cyprus - there is every single bit of horrible ground you could ever want. And in terms of the troops, they get hard and they get tough just operating out in this environment. When you throw in the weather as well, the requirement to manage the water intake - it does make for demanding training, which, regardless of the enemy, will take it out of you."
Corunna's six weeks as Lead Company will soon end, meanwhile.

After that, they'll switch to other duties on the British bases in Cyprus.
Next year, they'll put their infantry skills to good use as they head to America for a major exercise alongside the US Army.
