Saving Lives Under Fire
For the British military one of the legacies of the war in Afghanistan has been advances in battlefield medicine.
Prompt first aid saved the lives of hundreds of troops injured by small arms fire and improvised explosive devices (IED).
In Cyprus troops from The 1st Battalion, Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (1 LANCS), many of whom never served in Afghanistan, have been practising the skills needed to evacuate a casualty by a Griffin helicopter.
Nine troops from The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment lost their lives in Afghanistan.
Many more were undoubtedly saved thanks to these casualty evacuation skills.
This training provides soldiering knowledge that can mean the difference between life and death.
