An accommodation block at the Royal Navy's largest training establishment has been closed due to it being in poor condition.

Sailors living in Vivian Block at HMS Collingwood will relocate, following a decision by the Second Sea Lord to close it.

Second Sea Lord Martin J Connell said in a post on Twitter: "Last week I visited HMS Collingwood to see the state of accommodation for myself.

"Despite recent efforts, I’ve made the decision to close Vivian Block & everyone affected will be relocated.

"It's clear we need to do more to give our sailors the accommodation they deserve & expect."

Some personnel in Vivian Block took to social media to complain about no heating and hot water in the run up to Christmas.

Pictures also appeared to show major leaks.

HMS Collingwood is the Royal Navy's largest training establishment and is the headquarters of the Maritime Warfare School.

Military families also complain

In January, a campaigner told Forces News the system for military accommodation "is in chaos".

Military wife Lucy Thomas-Harle is campaigning for families amid heavy criticism of firms maintaining Armed Forces accommodation.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said in December that those responsible for the upkeep of military accommodation should  "up their game".

His words came after a British Army officer hit out on social media over living conditions as his baby slept in a mouldy home and a military mum was "told off" for privately paying for her heating to be repaired to keep her newborn baby warm.
