Major Upgrade Underway At Portsmouth Naval Base

Work has begun on a major upgrade to a jetty at Portsmouth Naval Base to allow Britain's new aircraft carriers to dock there.

The base will become home to HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, the largest ships ever built for the Royal Navy.

The 65,000 tonne former will be the first of the new generation of British aircraft carriers, and is due to enter service in 2020.

She's due to arrive at the home of the Royal Navy in around 18 months time - but at 280 metres long, the current facilities at Portsmouth Naval Base wouldn't be able to cope with her - so the quay side will need substantial strengthening.
