An ex-Royal Marine who was held in Dubai after being accused of spying has been cleared and will be allowed to leave the country.

Matthew Croucher, 40, held the rank of lance corporal and won the George Cross for bravery for his service in Afghanistan.

He was held in Dubai despite denying the accusations of spying and appealed for help from the UK Government.

Mr Croucher had been kept under virtual house arrest and was banned from leaving the country, but has now been cleared and will be allowed to leave after being detained in November.

Authorities in Dubai said the former marine had been "arrested after accessing a public facility using illegal means of technology".

"The case was referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution and, after thorough investigation, the evidence was found to be inadequate," the Dubai Media Office said.

"The case was dismissed and Croucher is now free to leave the UAE.

"The decision highlights the Dubai Public Prosecution's commitment to upholding the rule of law."

Before Mr Croucher knew of his freedom, he released a short statement in which he said he appreciated "the support and messages from those in the UK and further afield and hope this situation can be concluded at the earliest opportunity".

His family said the case against him had been "made up and ridiculous".

Mr Croucher served as an ambassador for the Royal British Legion in 2011.

He was recommended for the prestigious George Cross award for throwing himself on a Taliban tripwire grenade to save his comrades in Afghanistan.
