Bringing The Tragedy Of The Somme To Life
Each and every soldier killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme has been individually represented in a breathtaking art display that conveys the scale of the slaughter.
The display has been laid out in Northernhay Gardens, Exeter and was unveiled earlier today.
"The Shrouds of the Somme" has 19,240 individually wrapped figures to represent each of the soldiers who died that day.
57,470 was the number of total British casualties on July 1st, compared to a few thousand for the French and around 8,000 for the Germans.
