Building Blocks: The Construction Transforming Veterans' Lives

It may not look very different to any other building site, but behind the scenes, the Nelson Project is transforming the lives of Plymouth veterans.

12 men are being taught the skills to build property and when they've finished, they'll be armed with new qualifications.

According to the project's manager:

"They'll all be trained in a national level one in construction, health and safety, and a CSC card, and then they'll go onto further training."

Beyond the qualifications, those involved in the project will also be moving into the homes they've been building.

This is particularly important and rewarding because many of them have been homeless.

Funding for the project has come largely from the Homes and Communities Agency and DCH (Devon and Cornwall Housing), and it costs more than £8,000 to put a veteran through the building scheme.

The Community Self Build Agency launched the Nelson project last year, and the Plymouth City Council sold them the land for £1.

It's hoped the veterans will get the keys this June.

And as the project nears completion, it's hard not to ignore the fantastic view some of the front rooms will end up with.
