Defence Secretary Visits UK's Future Aircraft Carrier

The Defence Secretary has visited the Royal Navy's future aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth to show support for the defence industry in Scotland.

Michael Fallon spoke to Forces TV's Ali Gibson about several of the key issues affecting defence but began with an update on the construction of the two carriers (see above).

It comes after a visit to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, following the vote to extend UK airstrikes to Syria last week.

Mr Fallon met some of the men and women involved in Op Shader - the UK's combat mission against Daesh.

The Royal Air Force has been flying missions from Cyprus for 60 years, from Suez in the 1950s to the Gulf War.

While the US has a fleet of carriers in the Gulf, as yet Britain's fleet of Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers isn't operational which means this base in the Mediterranean remains a vital stepping stone for UK military operations in the Middle East.
