Donald Trump Appoints Controversial National Security Adviser
President-elect, Donald Trump has offered Lieutenant General Michael Flynn the position of national security adviser.
Flynn is a former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and advised Trump throughout his campaign
The job, which he has accepted, will involve shaping U.S. foreign and military policy.
His appointment has proved controversial as Flynn left the Obama administration following claims that he had a disruptive management style.
He, however, says he was being censored.
Flynn is also accused of having close ties with Russia. He has delivered paid speeches in Moscow and regularly appeared on Russian-owned channel RT.
He has aggressively criticised the Obama administration and led chants to lock Hillary Clinton up, who he has compared to enemies he had fought in battle.
He heavily criticised Mrs Clinton’s handling of classified information, despite coming under scrutiny for his own handling of classified information.
Trump and Flynn campaigned together during the election.
Whilst campaigning, Donald Trump spoke out against NATO, calling the organisation expensive and obsolete.
At a news conference in Brussels NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed high hopes for the President-elect.
It comes as U.S. President Barack Obama is on his final trip to Europe before Trump’s inauguration in January.
President Obama held a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel where Trump’s stance on Russia was discussed.
In Berlin, Obama met with other European leaders including Theresa May, Francois Hollande and Matteo Renzi before leaving for Peru.
