Downing Street Plays Down Reports Cameron Could Be New NATO Chief

David Cameron

The British Government says no decision has yet been made about whether to push for a British candidate to become the new NATO Secretary General.

It comes after recent reports that Prime Minister Theresa May could support a bid for her predecessor David Cameron to take up the position.

Jens Stoltenberg, the former Norwegian Prime Minister who currently holds the job, is due to serve until at least 2018.

A minister has been quoted by the Daily Mail as saying in regard to the matter:

"We've got to find a role for him – he has so much to offer. We have got to get him batting for Britain again."

The suggestion comes following doubt regarding Britain's role in global security as a result of the UK vote to leave the EU, which resulted in Cameron's resignation.

It is rumoured that he is now looking for a suitably high-profile role in international development.

However, Downing Street have insisted that no decision has been made over backing a domestic candidate.

Meanwhile, another government source has expressed scepticism, arguing that Cameron's decision to back military intervention to remove Muammar Gaddafi in Libya could count against him, saying:

"His political epitaph is to take short-term decisions and not carry them through."

Some former Prime Ministers have found it difficult to find a suitable position in public life after leaving Downing Street.

Cameron has reportedly been making the most of his newfound leisure time, however. Reports emerged around Christmas that the former PM had returned to his hobby of grouse shooting, which he had to give up whilst in his role as Prime Minister due to it generating controversy.
