Family Pays Tribute To Soldier Killed In 'Completely Senseless Act'

Jack Mitchell

The family of a soldier who died following an alleged assault at a nightclub have paid tribute to him as "the most wonderful person in the world".

Police were called to The Warehouse Nightclub in Stroud, Gloucestershire, at 2.07am on Sunday, where a man was being treated by paramedics.

He died as a result of his injuries and officers arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

The victim has not been formally identified but is believed to be Jack Mitchell, 24, a gunner in 32 Regiment Royal Artillery, based at The Royal School of Artillery in Larkhill, Wiltshire.

Gunner Mitchell's mother Kate and sister Jasmine paid tribute to him on Facebook.

His mother wrote: "As a mother who today lost a most precious gift through a completely senseless act, can I please ask all mothers to hold their children a little bit tighter tonight.

"My son was the kindest most gentlest man you could ever meet.

"My heart is broken, but if one thing can come out of Jack's death, that will save any other parents from this most excruciating pain, can it be that, before you throw that punch, stop and think what the consequences could be."

"I am so proud of my son and what he achieved. He had his whole life to look forward to. Me, his dad, his brother and his sisters will miss him every single day."

His sister wrote:

"The pain is indescribable. My heart is broken and always will be. My big brother, my soldier, my Jack. What happened should never have happened in the first place, no excuses."

"If anything should come of this, let it be that violence is never the answer. If somebody goes out for a drink with their friends, let them come home.

"My kind, lovely, handsome Jack has been taken away from us forever, not a bad bone in his body or a bad word to say about anyone.

"The kind words are appreciated, but please don't put any statuses looking for answers or gossip.

"I'm begging you if anybody was there and seen or heard anything or know anyone that does, please contact the police rather that broadcast it on Facebook."

"Please remember Jack as the most wonderful person in the world."

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police confirmed the 28-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody.

Detective Inspector Jim Taylor said:

"The nightclub was very busy at the time of the assault, which occurred in the upstairs bar of the premises. It is likely that a number of people would have witnessed the incident and I am keen to hear from anyone who has information which can help us with our inquiries."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the force on 101, quoting incident 39 of February 5th.
