German’s Foreign Minister Warns Leaders To Learn From Hitler’s Mistakes

Speaking on the anniversary of the day that Soviet soldiers liberated holocaust victims from Aushwitz, the German Foreign Minister notes that in a time of such instability, the leaders of the modern world should learn from past leaders’ mistakes.

In a statement, Frank-Walter Steinmeier said his nation remains committed to commemorating the genocide, honouring the memory of the victims and taking responsibility for the crimes.

Mr Steinmeier said Auschwitz stands for all death camps and the entire Nazi “persecution and murder machinery” which will forever remain a part of German history.

He said that while Germany cannot change or undo what happened, the country has a continues obligation to commemorate the genocide, honour the memory of the victims and take responsibility for the crimes.

Noting the political instability in the world today he said that “history should be a lesson, a warning and incentive all at the same time”.

Before adding “there can and should be no end to remembrance”.

His warning came hours before he was due to hand over the post of foreign minister to the current economy minister, Sigmar Gabriel.
