HMS Bulwark Plays Its Part in Gallipoli 100 Commemorations
As part of the ongoing commemorations of the Gallipoli campaign, the Royal Navy show their contribution to proceedings in the form of the fleet flagship.
Commanded by Captain Nick Cooke-Priest Royal Navy, HMS Bulwark, the Fleet Flagship, is leading the international sail past of ships at Cape Helles during the commemorations and will signify a minute’s silence by firing one of her saluting guns.
She is also providing the large Ceremonial Guard at the Memorial drawn from selected members of the ship’s company.
Captain Nick Cooke-Priest, HMS Bulwark's Commanding Officer had this to say:
“The Gallipoli campaign was a hugely-significant event in the First World War. It is a tragic and heart-wrenching chapter in history, a story of bravery, brutality, compassion, heroism and loss and – in the aftermath – extraordinary humanity,”
“The scale and nature of the ceremonies 100 years on, are right and fitting for commemorating the memories of the glorious dead.” “My ship’s company and I feel deeply honoured and privileged to play a part in these commemorations and to be here to honour the fallen from all nations,”
HMS Bulwark is the Royal Navy’s newest amphibious assault ship. Designated a Landing Platform Dock (LPD) by virtue of her floodable dock and flight deck, displacing nearly 20,000 tonnes and 176m in length, she was launched in November 2001 and commissioned on 28th April 2005.
Retained at high readiness by the Royal Navy to deploy worldwide for contingent operations, HMS Bulwark is the Royal Navy’s most advanced Command and Control platform.
