HMS Ocean Docks In Greenwich For VE Day

One of the Royal Navy's largest ships, HMS Ocean, is docked in Greenwich ahead of the weekend's VE Day commemorations

The vessel has recently undergone a multi-million pound refit and been re-dedicated by the Queen

HMS Ocean sailed along the Thames on the way to Greenwich, passing under the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and squeezing through the Thames Barrier.

Meanwhile, Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines around the world have taken part in national celebrations of the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.

The personnel of type 23 frigate HMS Kent lined up in the shape of VE whilst on their way home from a six month Gulf deployment, while HMS Richmond created the V for Victory on hers.

Commanding Officer of HMS Kent, Commander Andrew Block said:

"We are extremely proud to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE day – we all know and respect the sacrifices made by generations past to ensure the freedom of Europe from tyranny – and it is important we all remember that on occasions such as this."
