Reports: British Soldiers Can Reveal Sensitive Information If Captured
British troops who have been captured by enemy forces will no longer have to reveal only their name, rank and serial number, according to reports.

The Sunday Times says senior officers have accepted it is unrealistic for soldiers on operations at risk from extremist terror organisations like al-Qaeda and Daesh to refuse to disclose intelligence.

They have been told instead to conduct a slow release of information if they are held by fighters likely to torture or execute them.

The intention is to hold back the most sensitive information for as long as possible.

The Ministry of Defence says there has been no change in official policy:

“The guidance for members of the Armed Forces, If captured, remains unchanged. Personnel are required to give their number, rank, full names and date of birth, and do not have to give any further information.”

The troops are reportedly taught a “traffic light” system with information given a “green, orange or red” grading.

Intelligence graded as green can be released early by the PoWs but orange and red information should be delayed.

The paper claimed a study by military psychiatrists found that most, if not all, captured soldiers will eventually give away secrets even though they have been trained to resist interrogation.

The new approach would bring an end to an accepted military practice which has lasted for more than 60 years.

Under Geneva conventions, PoWs are expected to give their name, rank, date of birth and serial number so they can be identified as lawful combatants and treated in accordance with their rank.

British troops are also advised that they can give their blood group and religion.
