Roman Bones Discovered At Defence Building Site

The building of a new defence college in Worthy Down has encountered an unusual obstacle. Roman bones have been discovered at the site. It started with the discovery of a single human skull when contractors first got to work on the site for the brand new defence college at Worthy Down.

The workers downed tools and made a call to the police and Oxford Archaeology. The Archaeology team quickly determined the bones had been here a very long time. Since the 3rd and 4th centuries to be exact.

One skeleton soon became 18, complete with Roman artefacts like coins from the time and evidence of the clothes that would have been worn and coffins.

Fortunately for Defence Infrastructure Organisation and Skanska Contractors who are building the £250 million pound college, the building work has been able to continue right alongside the delicate excavation work with builders working less than 100 feet from the Archaeologists in some areas of the site.

The new training site should be complete in 2019 and will provide state of the art facilities for personnel from all three services.
