Russia has accidentally hit a block of flats in its Arctic region with part of a cruise missile during a test that went wrong, according to reports.

The three-storey block in the village of Nyenoks reportedly caught fire afterwards, damaging a roof and several apartments, but nobody was hurt after residents were evacuated in time.

The village is near a Russian naval base at Severodvinsk, in the far north-west.

The Russian Ministry of Defence said in a statement carried by news agencies in the country that the missile inflicted no damage, and that experts are working to determine the reasons behind the failure.

It comes as Russia has been firing cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea at rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad's Syrian government forces.

In October US officials said four Russian missiles had landed in Iran, although there was no independent confirmation of this.

Russia claimed last week, meanwhile, that it had fired cruise missiles targeting Daesh militants from a submarine in the Mediterranean.
