Spirit Of The Somme: Care For Veterans In Belfast

The sheer carnage of the First World War left tens of thousands of servicemen dead or maimed on the battlefields of Northern Europe.
 
A specialist hospital was established in Ulster to deal with the wounded when they came home.
 
The Ulster Volunteer Force offered its complete medical organisation to the War Office when hostilities commenced in 1914.
 
The hospital they established outside Belfast was in the grounds of an old family home.
 
The peaceful country serenity was conducive to psychological as well as physical recovery for the soldiers treated there.
 
The soldiers kept chickens, were allowed allotments, and played billiards.
