Without the families, we wouldn't be able to do the job that we do says First Sea Lord
Delivering his first Christmas message as First Sea Lord, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins gave his gratitude not only to the sailors, marines, civil servants and contractors who have assisted the Royal Navy throughout the year – but to their families.
The Royal Marine has focused his efforts this year on transforming the Royal Navy in line with his vision of a hybrid navy, ready for warfighting by 2029.
He is spearheading the Atlantic Bastion programme, which will combine crewed warships with uncrewed and autonomous systems, strengthening the UK's ability to counter threats from Russia in the North Atlantic.
Gen Sir Gwyn remarked that 2025 had been a great year and wished all servicemen and women a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
Sir Gwyn's Christmas message in full:
"I just want this opportunity to say thank you. Thank you to all our sailors, our Marines, our civil servants and our contractors that have helped the Royal Navy deliver so much throughout 2025.
"But, I also want to thank the families, because without the families, we wouldn't be able to do the job that we do.
"Their support is essential to us to be able to focus on our work when the nation really needs it.
"It's been a great year. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and I wish you the very best of luck for 2026."
