Wor Stories: Theatre Stage Set For North-East Veterans

A group of Armed Forces veterans are set to step into the spotlight at Newcastle's Theatre Royal, in a show based on their experiences in uniform.

'Wor Stories', which opens next week, features ex-servicemen and women from the north east who have joined Bravo 22 Company, a 'recovery and well-being through the arts' programme which supports wounded, injured or ill serving service personnel and veterans.

The show is a collection of true-life stories, 'from Civvy Street to the recruitment office, the barrack room to the battlefield and back to Civvy Street'.

Gary Kitching, who wrote the show with the Bravo 22 volunteers, told the Newcastle Chronicle the veterans, some of whom had been diagnosed with PTSD, 'just wanted to tell their stories'. He said:
"Right from the start I've said if there's something they don't want to talk about then they don’t have to. A lot of the guys suffer from PTSD which is an invisible illness and we have to be sensitive to that. I think there's often a misconception about guys who have served in the Armed Forces. I've been very surprised at how open they’ve been. I've asked them all what they wanted to say and the general answer was always, 'I just want to tell my story'."
Wor Stories, written by Gary Kitching and The Bravo 22 Company, and directed by Chris Connel, takes place in the Theatre Royal Studio from Wednesday, December 7 until Saturday, December 10. Tickets: 08448 112121 or visit https://www.theatreroyal.co.uk/whats-on/wor-stories
