Bahrain Royal Guard valiantly defeats British Army in thrilling night of boxing
The Bahrain Royal Guard have dethroned the British Army in their annual boxing friendly at Catterick Garrison’s Infantry Training Centre.
In what could be seen as a surprise upset, the team from Bahrain sparred and outpaced the Army, who were defeated 6-2.
Last year’s event was a memorable one for the Army where they won with a 6-2 victory against the boxers from Bahrain, in front of an energetic crowd of over 1000 people.
The Army started their evening strongly with Lance Corporal Johnston sparring to win the first bout of the evening, beating her opponent Sergeant Khamis by a unanimous points decision.
The Bahrain Royal Guard then showed their pace and prowess in the ring with three wins in a row before the interval, causing problems for the Army who were then trailing by 3-1 to their opponents.
After the interval, Private Mohamad defeated Fusilier Calderwood in the 57kg by a split decision, to give the team from Bahrain a 4-1 lead.
The Army’s woes continued however, with Lance Corporal Harris and Guardsman Young-Hastings both losing to their opponents by a referee stopped contest.
But the Army’s Lance Corporal Moulds came through to finish the team’s night on a high, defeating Lance Corporal Limbu by a split decision.
The Bahrain Royal Guard emerge victorious, winning six out of eight bouts to flip last year’s result against the British Army and take the title for this year.
