Army secure dominant 40 overs Inter Services win in Portsmouth tournament

The Army and the RAF play on the final day of the 40 overs Inter Services Cricket Championships

The Army women have retained their Inter Services 40 overs title after a commanding performance in Portsmouth where they beat the Royal Air Force by 100 runs.

Earlier in the three-day tournament, the Royal Air Force beat their Royal Navy hosts by 10 wickets in the first match â€“ then the Army followed that up in match two with an eight-wicket win over the Senior Service.

That then set the stage for the third and final match between the Army and the RAF.

The RAF elected to field after winning the toss, and the ladies in red were ruthless in their pursuit for a big total with sister duo Georgina and Connie Cant, as well as Amanda Potgieter, scoring half-centuries.

The Cant sisters stormed to 116 runs in 15 overs, before Georgina was bowled out by Gina Witchurch for 77.

Connie Cant, who is the skipper for the Army, was run out by Mollie Rebanks for 51 after 23 overs.

Amanda Potgieter scored 73 runs as teammate Mel Vaggers narrowly missed out on a half-century, ending the innings with 49 runs.

But the Army ended their innings in a strong position, reaching 268 for two in 40 overs.

The RAF replied with some big-shot play from skipper Molly Rebanks by smashing 12 fours, and with 82 runs on the board, she looked set for a century until she was bowled out by Carly Rush halfway through the innings.

The rest of the RAF line-up had a mammoth task to chase down the Army's big total, and with RAF Jess Doyle picking up a hand injury, a player down meant that all RAF batters were out with 168 runs after 37.4 overs, sealing the Army's win by 100 runs.
