Royal Navy women 'in a good place' following their victory over UK Fire Service

Watch: Navy head coach Glenn Long speaks to BFBS Sport following a 1-0 victory over the UK Fire Service

The Royal Navy women's football team have started their year strongly after beating the UK Fire Service 1-0 in a friendly match in Portsmouth.

A second-half screamer by Kate Shorter swung the game in the Navy's favour after a closely fought encounter with a competitive UK Fire Service side.

With several key players missing due to deployments, it was a chance for the Navy women's head coach Chief Petty Officer Glenn Long to blood some new players ahead of the Inter Services.

Speaking to BFBS Sport, he said: "I thought it was a scrappy start from our point of view, however, we grew into the match and started to play some football about 10 or 15 minutes in.

"We played some really good stuff, was calm and composed on the ball and achieved a few of our goals that we had set out tonight."

The Navy women will play several friendly matches as they eye the Inter Services Championships in March where they hope they can dethrone a dominant Royal Air Force team.

PO Long said: "We've been a team in transition really for the last couple of years, we've had quite a lot of experience [players] leave and we are blooding some new and younger girls that have come in.

"I think we're in a good place, we're still unbeaten this year, fingers crossed, at the moment and we're progressing well."

He added: "A few things to work on, but we've got a couple of meets prior to the Inter Services so hopefully we'll work on those and improve and be ready to go for the Inter Services."
