Royal Signals come from behind to triumph over REME and win the Woolwich Cup
The Royal Signals have won the Army Inter Corps Woolwich Cup after a sensational 5-2 win over the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).
Playing at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, the home of Reading FC, the setting set up what promised to be a closely fought final and a fierce battle for the Cup.
The REME got off the mark first with a well-taken header from a corner kick from Dec Shuttleworth, giving them a 0-1 lead.
That lead stood until half-time, with many opportunities by both sides to score not coming to fruition.
Things began to work in the Royal Signals' favour in the second half when they were awarded a penalty after Luke Greenway was dropped in the box by REME's Ethan Phillips.
Greenway converted the penalty successfully to level up against REME.
Things then began to sway towards a potential penalty shootout, until the Royal Signals' Darren Elliot struck the ball into the back of the net to give them a 2-1 lead.
Minutes later, midfielder Jorge Crofts punted in another goal for the Royal Signals before skipper Jamie Turner followed up to give them a 4-1 lead in an incredible turnaround after a period of stalemate in the earlier stages of the game.
REME, now very much on the back foot, managed to claim a consolatory goal courtesy of Jordan Hicking, but that momentum was soon crushed by Luke Greenway, who extended the Royal Signals' lead to 5-2.
At the full-time whistle, the Royal Signals confirmed their victory with a dominant 5-2 win over REME to win the Woolwich Cup for the third time in their history.
