UKAF men and German Bundeswehr play out draw in fast-paced encounter

UK Armed Forces men's footballers and the German Bundeswehr drew 0-0 in a high-paced encounter at Aldershot FC.

Under the lights, and on a dry evening in Hampshire, both sides looked to attack and play in a free-flowing manner from kick-off.

The Bundeswehr team started strongly down the left-hand side with Athanasios Noutsos coming close to scoring several times within the opening 15 minutes; the Germans had the better of the opportunities in the first 20 minutes.

Neither side had much time on the ball and, despite the football being end-to-end for large parts of the first half, organised German defence prevented UKAF from finding a way through and the teams went into the break 0-0.

Michael Campbell came close to putting the home team in front in the opening few minutes of the second half, but his shot on target was stopped by German goalkeeper Maximilian Weisbäcker.

A quick surface enabled both sides to maintain a quick tempo in the second half, much like in the first, and the game opened up with 20 minutes to go.

Michael Campbell failed to connect to the end of a UKAF free kick, right in front of the keeper. Just a few minutes later, he found no one to meet his promising cross into the box.

Sam Rawlings was next in line to try and put UKAF 1-0 up, but his header was flicked over the bar by Weisbäcker.

In the closing minutes of stoppage time, it was the turn of UKAF keeper Luke Cairney to put in an excellent save, tipping a Bundeswehr shot over the crossbar to keep the match goalless when the final whistle sounded.

Earlier, a stunning injury time goal from Ciara Boylan helped UKAF Women draw 1-1 with their German opposition.
