Armed Forces eMotorsports Championships: Navy gets first win
The Royal Navy's Matty Chambers has taken the first win of the season by a non-Royal Air Force driver after coming first in the second race of round six at the Okayama circuit.
Chambers won with a five-second gap to a train of RAF drivers, which saw championship favourite Will Foulkes get taken out by RAF rival Martin, on the final lap.
The RAF dominated the first race at Okayama with Martin taking the win over Foulkes and Stuart McPhaden.
RAF driver McPhaden led the race in the opening stages, before getting overtaken by Martin and Foulkes after a five-way RAF battle, which also included Chris Boland and Chris Pawley.
The second race saw the RAF with more work to do due to a reverse grid start, which saw Chambers take the lead over pole sitter, Luke Arpino of the RAF, to which he built a five-second lead throughout the course of the race.
With Chambers assured of a Royal Navy win, an RAF scrap in the final lap saw double race winner in round 5, Will Foulkes, taken out on the final lap, which could prove to be a monumental moment for the championship.
The chaos of the final lap saw the RAF's Michael Clough and McPhaden take the second and third podium places behind Chambers.
Speaking after the race, winner Chambers said it was "satisfying to get one over" on the RAF.
He said: "I obviously got a bit of luck with the reverse grid because the first race wasn't great, but after that, I knew the job that I had to do which was to try to get past Luke Arpino and break the tow.
"It was a struggle to start with, but I got a bout of luck with a back marker which seemed to break the tow and then I just tried to concentrate on my own race.
"It is satisfying to get one over on them [the RAF], it had not been a great season for us so far but, hopefully, it will be a little turnaround."
The championship heads back to Brands Hatch next week for the seventh round of the championship with four rounds to go.
