Army Netball star set to make Super League debut for Surrey Storm
Army Netball's Private Amy Howell is set to make her Super League debut for Surrey Storm as the tournament gets under way this weekend.
An impressive performance for the Army at last year's Inter Services Championships caught the eye of Surrey Storm's coaching staff, which led to Pte Howell signing for the Super League outfit for the 2024 season.
A Combat Medical Technician with 1 Medical Regiment, Pte Howell has described her time with the Guildford-based outfit as "enjoyable".
She said: "Yes it's good. I'm enjoying as much court time as I can, even just training with the girls has given me a lot of experience and everything is enjoyable, so I'm just taking it as it comes."
Overseeing the Army's training was Storm's head coach Mikki Austin, who describes Pte Howell's signing as a "no-brainer" while also talking up the burgeoning relationship between the Super League side and the current Inter Services champions.
She said: "I think the Inter Services tournament provides so many fantastic opportunities for coaches like myself or other club coaches to spot athletes competing at a really high level, whether that's in the female or the mixed game.
"So yes, for us seeing her compete in that, it was a no-brainer really to at least reach out and have that conversation to see whether it was something she was open to.
"Army Netball have been absolutely fantastic in supporting her transition through competing in both programmes and, obviously, managing her massive work load."
Pte Howell will briefly pause her Super League duties and return to Army colours for this year's Inter Services campaign which takes place in March.
