Rhys Calland makes history as first Forces athlete to compete at 'England's Strongest Man'
British Army Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers soldier Corporal Rhys Calland has become the first Armed Forces strongman competitor to compete at Ultimate Strongman's 'England's Strongest Man' competition.
Cpl Calland, who is based in Somerset, placed a respectable 10th overall out of 16 competitors – who are among the best strongman competitors the UK has to offer in what is one of the fastest growing sports.
The competition, which was televised live from The Dome in Doncaster, saw competitors compete across five strongman events.
Cpl Calland's best performance came in the Daddy Dumbbell round – where he placed 6th overall.
He also placed 7th in the Stones of Strength, 9th in the Pole Hoist, 12th in the Duck Walk and 13th in the Super Yoke.
Cpl Calland qualified for the event after he finished 3rd out of 17 in an open class tournament, pitted against a number of former England's and Britain's strongest men, world record holders and international podium finishers.
After only three years in the sport, he has already won Devon's Strongest Man twice, claimed the Armed Forces Strongest Man title, and placed first at the World Heavy Events Association (WHEA) World Championships.
He already has his eyes on taking the next step up to competing at the UK's Strongest Man competition in the near future.
