Royal Air Force topple dominant Army in Inter Services water polo final

Watch: The Royal Air Force cause a stunning upset at the Inter Services Water Polo final.

The Royal Air Force men's water polo team have beaten the Army to win the Inter Services championships.

The RAF defeated the defending champions 15-13 come the final bell to take the title, a result that is being viewed as a major upset.

The airmen trailed the Army by 7-4 at half-time, but came roaring back in the second half to make up the deficit after the Army suffered two red cards.

The Army, who came into this year's championships with three consecutive Inter Services titles under their belts, did well to come back towards the end of the game, but there was no stopping the airmen who had momentum on their side.

RAF Water Polo team captain Squadron Leader Simon Almond said that the airmen won by "sticking to our game plan" which he believed had their Army opponents "rattled".

He said: "I think we won it by sticking to our game plan in the heat of the moment and I think it is always so tempting to get caught up in the heat of the battle.

"It's trying to harness that energy which I felt we did, but we stuck very much to our game plan and I think the Army probably went in as favourites and, I'll be honest, we rattled them!

"I think we came back as we planned and we had them rattled, and we were able to execute when it mattered more importantly," he added.
