Royal Navy suffers second round blowout against Workington Town in Challenge Cup
The Royal Navy men's rugby league team has suffered a blowout in the second round of the Betfred Challenge Cup after losing 56-0 against Workington Town in Portsmouth.
After successfully coming back to defeat Mirfield ARLFC in the first round, the Navy was hoping to beat the League One outfit at home with a chance to play against Leigh Leopards in the third round.
But weather conditions played its role in this game with wet, wind and a muddy pitch made for a tricky game ahead for the Navy.
Workington Town showed their trump card with left-wing Jonathan Hutton scoring the first try four minutes into the first half, and it was the try that would begin the Cumbrian outfits flurry of tries.
The visitors began their bruising onslaught campaign against the Navy, who seemed to have no problems with the conditions they were facing, and scored a further five tries in the opening forty.
They held a commanding 0-30 lead against the Navy, who struggled to get off the mark in the first half.
Workington Town brought much more of the same in the second half, scoring a further five tries with Hutton scoring a hat-trick and Ciaran Walker adding the extras with the conversions.
The Navy however did their best to prevent Workington Town from running away with more tries in the second half, thus preventing what could’ve been their worst-ever Challenge Cup result.
As the final whistle was blown, the Navy will not progress further in the Challenge Cup with a bruising 56-0 loss at home in Portsmouth.
Workington Town will progress to the third round and face Super League outfit Leigh Leopards.
The Navy’s loss means no military teams will progress further in the Challenge Cup, after the British Army also lost their round two match against Wests Warriors on Saturday.
