History-makers: 2 Rifles win maiden Army Rugby Sevens championship in Aldershot
2nd Battalion, The Rifles have won the Army Inter Unit Sevens title for the first time in the regiment's history.
The Northern Ireland-based unit claimed Army rugby's showpiece sevens event thanks to a 29-12 victory over 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland in the final at Aldershot.
Fourteen teams entered this year's competition, with units from the UK and Cyprus battling for glory.
At the semi-final stage, 2 Scots ran in five tries against 1 Yorks to book their place in the final with a handsome 35-19 win against their Catterick-based opponents.
Meanwhile, 2 Rifles always looked in control of their semi final with 1st Battalion, The Welsh Guards. A 24-17 victory for the men from Lisburn set up the showdown with 2 Scots.
Featuring a number of players who represent the Army Senior team on the civilian sevens circuit , 2 Rifles proved too strong for the side from Scotland in the final as they raced into a 19-0 lead at the break.
2 Scots hit back in the second half with two tries of their own. Hopes of a comeback however were short-lived.
The Riflemen ran in further scores for the victory and lift the Army Sevens silverware for the first time.
