Why An RAF Man Is Handing Over The Trophy At The FA Cup Final

While all eyes will be on the Royal wedding on Saturday, that won't be the only historic event taking place.

It's also the 137th FA Cup final, with Manchester United and Chelsea to face off at Wembley.

And the forces are set to play a key role, with RAF airman Senior Aircraftman Tom Claisse having been chosen to carry the trophy to the Royal Box after the match.

The RAF's long-serving football captain has been given the honour to mark the 100th year since the Air Force's creation - and it's something he's immensely proud of:

"It's a massive honour... I was a bit shocked... [but] it's absolutely brilliant.

"I was ecstatic [when I found out]... It's one of the biggest things I could ever do in my life, something I can... pass onto my kids, grandkids and tell a story about."

"Especially with it being 100 years of the RAF, as well, it's a bit more pertinent. It's exceptional, really."

SAC Claisse has been out injured for the past few weeks but says this honour more than makes up for it.

The military man also told Forces Network there's been some traditional forces humour in the build-up to his big moment:

"I just hope I don't fall up the steps! I've been getting a bit of grief from work and [from] my family, [who are saying] 'just don't fall whatever you do - it's worth a lot of money!

"I'll probably look down, to be honest. Normal servicemen [would have their] head up, shoulders back but I think I'll be head down to floor [looking at the] steps... [to] make sure I don't fall!

Ultimately, however, he's confident his military training will set him in good stead:

"It's just like being on parade really... It'll be a proud moment for myself and my family."

The RAF is playing a prominent role with the FA Cup this year as part of its centenary celebrations, with flypasts scheduled and a number of Air Force personnel set to be in attendance.

SAC Claisse will present the trophy to the widow of former England Manchester United and Chelsea star Ray Wilkins, who died last month.

Jackie Wilkins will then present it to the winning captain - a job usually performed by Prince William, who has another important engagement that day...
