Iconic Lancaster bomber pays a special tribute to those involved in Operation Market Garden

Watch: The Lancaster Bomber flypast over Ginkel Heath

A Lancaster bomber from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight has taken to the skies over Arnhem to pay tribute to all those involved in Operation Market Garden 80 years ago.

On 17 September 1944, hundreds of Allied soldiers parachuted from military aircraft into the Nazi-occupied Netherlands as part of a Second World War offensive, and to honour the memory of the fallen their modern equivalents repeated the jump.

Hundreds of Nato paratroopers took part in the jump to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem, with BFBS Forces News live on YouTube from Drop Zone "Y" on Ginkel Heath in the Netherlands.

Earlier, the Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Roly Walker, was the first to jump out of the A400M Atlas, leading the UK's participation in the commemorative drop.

The Chief of the General Staff said he was "very honoured and humbled" to make the jump.

Gen Sir Roly, 54, said on X: "A chance to pause and reflect on the high courage and selfless sacrifice of those from Allied Airborne Forces who fought and died for the freedom of us all."

Some 700 paratroopers from eight Nato nations - including the Netherlands, Germany, the UK and the US parachuted from 12 aircraft.

The Army's parachute display team, the Red Devils, were also a part of the airborne spectacle.

BFBS Forces News was also live on YouTube to watch the paras make the jump over Ginkel Heath.
