RIAT: Meet the aircraft jointly operated by 12 nations to do heavy lifting

A C-17 aircraft, owned and operated jointly by 12 nations, has been seen at the Royal International Air Tattoo for the first time.

The plane is a unique example of interoperability put into practice in the air.

The countries, which include the United States, Estonia, Finland and Sweden, bought the heavy lift aircraft in 2009 in a shared response to the mission in Afghanistan.

Based in Hungary, all 12 countries now jointly operate three aircraft, as a Strategic Airlift Capability.
