Project Tempest explained and what it means for UK air power

UK defence analyst Tim Ripley, from Jane's Defence Weekly, digs deep into Tempest in the video above and discusses some of the potential future challenges the multi-million-pound project might encounter.

Speaking with Forces News, Tim says that this is the first time ever that the European defence industry has co-operated with Japan on such a big and important programme, building combat aircraft.

He added: "It's not just how our opponents will react; how will our allies react? Will they want to join, or will they want to sabotage it? That is an interesting thing to watch."

It comes after Rishi Sunak announced the UK would be partnering with Japan and Italy to procure the next-generation supersonic fighter jet.

Speaking about the deal, the Prime Minister said the success of the project would "keep the country safe from the new threats that we face".

The Prime Minister said the Tempest international coalition will ensure the UK and allies are "outpacing and out-manoeuvring those who seek to do us harm".
