Wreck of British WW2 submarine found after decades-long search

Watch: Royal Navy's HMS Triumph has been found after going missing in 1942.

The wreckage of a special operations World War Two submarine has been discovered in the Aegean Sea, according to reports.

A Greek diver has come forward to claim that he has found wreckage that could be the lost submarine HMS Triumph that went missing in 1942.

A Royal Navy spokesperson said: "Although HMS Triumph was known to be operating in the area at that time, further assessment work is ongoing to clarify the wreck's identity. 

 

"Irrespective of this, it is the last resting place of personnel on board who died, and we request that the vessel is left undisturbed."

The submarine was built in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and launched in 1938.

She disappeared in 1942 and the fate of her 64 crew members remained unknown despite decades of searching.

The Ministry of Defence will liaise with partners in the region and collect further information about the wreck.
