CB90: Next-generation fast assault combat boat has both speed and manoeuvrability

Watch: New generation of CB90 fast assault craft is even more potent

The CB90, originally developed by Saab for the Swedish Navy, is a fast military assault craft, which can carry up to 20 troops and cargo, in shallow or open waters.

Three of these combat boats have been donated to the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine to help the country with its defences in the Black Sea.

But what can the CB90 do?

Its shallow draught makes it ideal for deploying and extracting personnel to and from shorelines fast, as well as for raids and inshore/nearshore coastal protection operations.

According to Saab, its twin water jet enables it to reach a top speed "way beyond" 40 knots (74 km/h) in shallow coastal waters, making the vessel fast and manoeuvrable.

The CB90 has a range of 300 nautical miles at 20 knots and can perform sharp turns at high speeds, decelerating to a complete stop in just 40 metres.

Forces News was shown the CB90's combat management system when Saab first showcased its capabilities in London.

These include an assault track fire remote weapon station, which can lock on to targets which it can then follow independently of how the boat moves around.

Anders Hellman, head of Saab's Docksta Shipyards, said: "We have gone from a transport boat to a boat with added capabilities for fighting."

Around 250 CB90s are operating for naval forces worldwide, including Ukraine, and Sweden has just ordered 10 more for its navy.
