The Ministry of Defence (MOD) says UK military service members are banned from travelling to Ukraine.

The Defence Secretary told the House of Commons any serving personnel who go to Ukraine "will be breaking the law and they will be prosecuted when they return for going absent without leave or deserting".

Britons have been advised against all travel to Ukraine following Russia's invasion of the country, where the UK has limited consular support and is unlikely to be able to offer assistance to anyone there.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "All service personnel are prohibited from travelling to Ukraine until further notice.

"This applies whether the service person is on leave or not. Personnel travelling to Ukraine will face disciplinary and administrative consequences."

The UK is working with its allies to provide a range of support to Ukraine, including enhancing that nation's defence capability.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Defence Secretary, who served in the Scots Guards, have both previously urged Britons not to travel to Ukraine to join the fighting.

Mr Wallace said last week "lethal and non-lethal aid" would continue to be provided to Ukraine, while the MOD has offered its assistance to the Home Office as visa applications are processed for Ukrainians fleeing the war zone.
