Number of Russian drone attacks reaches highest level since war began, says MOD

Russia's armed forces launched more attack drones in September than any other month since the start of the conflict – with fears October will be worse.

The MOD's latest defence intelligence update said more than 1,300 one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicles (OWA-UAV) were launched against Ukraine by Moscow last month.

Ukraine has developed the Sting drone which was designed to intercept the Iranian-built Shahed drones which have been used in high numbers by Russia.

The MOD said: "During September 2024, Russia launched over 1,300 one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicles (OWA-UAVs) into Ukraine.

"This represents the highest number of OWA-UAVs launched in a month since the start of the conflict.

"Based on current rates it is almost certain that Russia will surpass that number in October 2024."

The MOD stated it was unclear if Russia could sustain the level of drone attacks throughout the rest of the year although, on a shorter time scale, it is feared the attacks will increase.

It is also believed that support from Iran has increased Russia's domestic production.

The MOD went on: "Russia utilises its OWA-UAVs against a multitude of targets, particularly energy infrastructure, given their ability to strike deep into Ukrainian territory, maintaining pressure on the Ukrainian air defence system."
