US expected to announce $2.6bn in a fresh round of military aid for Ukraine

A new $2.6bn US military aid package for Ukraine is expected to be announced as soon as Monday, according to three US officials.
This latest aid package reportedly could include air surveillance radars, anti-tank rockets and fuel trucks to assist in Ukraine's fight against Russia.
A list of equipment is expected to be finalised over the weekend, with the dollar amount and the specifics of the equipment to be donated still susceptible to change, an official said on the condition of anonymity.
Reports expect the inclusion of precision aerial munitions, bridging equipment, and recovery vehicles to help disabled heavy equipment such as tanks.
Also reported are additional rounds for NASAMS air defences that the US and allies have given to Kyiv.
US aid assistance to Ukraine so far
The US is leading a coalition of more than 54 countries — from North America to Europe to the Indo-Pacific — providing military assistance to help Ukraine.
They have now pledged more than $30bn worth of security assistance to Ukraine since the invasion.
Here is a list of the security assistance delivered to Ukraine by the US:
- 160 – 155mm Howitzers
- 100 – Armoured Medical Treatment Vehicles
- 1 – Patriot Air Defence Battery
- 15 – Scan Eagle Unmanned Aerial Sytems
- 31 – Abrams Tanks
- 109 – Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles
- 10 – Air Surveillance Radars
- 90 – Stryker Armoured Personnel Carries
- 580 – Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles
- 111m+ – Rounds of Small Arms Ammunition
- 8 – National Advanced Surface to Air Missile Systems
- 1,700 + – High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicles
- 38 – High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems
- 4 – Satellite Communications Antennas
According to the report, of the $2.6bn, $500m is being sourced from Presidential Drawdown Authority funds, which allow the president to access existing US stocks in a state of emergency.
This will be used to purchase munitions to aid Kyiv in pushing a spring offensive against the Russian invasion.
Apart from that, $2.1bn will be taken from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) fund. According to reports, this would allow the Biden administration to buy weapons from the industry instead of from US stockpiles.
