In pictures: UK's military support for Sudan evacuation

Images of the Armed Forces' large-scale mission to evacuate Britons from Sudan on RAF flights have been released.

A military operation to evacuate British nationals from Sudan was undertaken by the UK due to escalating violence.

"The Armed Forces conducted this complex operation under extremely challenging circumstances and their bravery and courage is commended," said the Ministry of Defence (MOD).

On Tuesday morning, an RAF C-130 transport carrier was seen on flight trackers leaving an airbase north of the Sudan capital Khartoum as the operation was under way.

The operation involved more than 1,200 personnel from 16 Air Assault Brigade, the Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace on Monday called the successful operation to remove British embassy staff and their families from Sudan "dangerous and precarious".

Mr Wallace said: "It was dangerous and precarious but, nevertheless, we managed to use both C130s and A400 aircraft to go in and collect our diplomats and their residents and fly out to safety."

He added that the operation, which was carried out in conjunction with the US and French military, was "an international effort".

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that the British Armed Forces had carried out the "complex and rapid" military operation on Sunday.
