Charities Unite Behind Veterans

Military charities are calling for a veterans commission to help the Armed Forces Covenant deliver on its promises.

Some 2,000 charities have signed the Covenant, as have all Britain’s local councils, and hundreds of businesses.

They all have different fields of expertise, from helping service children to veterans in prison, but they want more cohesion and involvement from the government.

There’s concern a legal requirement to support service personnel and veterans is not always being delivered.
"There is a lack of guidance at the operational level to help identify best practice and help people do better. And events like this seek to bridge that gap by bringing informed and questioning practioners together to exchange ideas".
Sarah Lattaway, from Forward Assist, pointed out that the typical veteran is seen as an old man whose friends names are on a World War Two memorial, or a younger man who lost a limb in Afghanistan.

While these are veterans, she said, there are other people out there who don't fit this stereotype but are still in need of support.
