Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Guests of Honour on St Patrick's Day

Since the Victorian era Irish soldiers have been presented with a sprig of shamrock to mark Saint Patrick's Day, wherever in the world they may be serving.

The Irish Guards are receiving theirs today at their base in Aldershot, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are guests of honour.

The Duchess is presenting officers and guardsmen at Mons Barracks with their shamrockswhile the Royal Irish Regiment held their parades on Saturday.
