Great War History Comes To Life In Edinburgh

Wearing a uniform at the weekend wouldn't be everyone's idea of fun, but for living history groups, it's a key part of the job.

At Edinburgh Castle, the Great War Living History Society is using tourists as part of an entertaining display.

It's designed to explain some of the background to the First World War.

688,000 Scots served in the First World War and a century on, it's the aim of groups like this to bring that history to life.

They're doing that by wearing the uniforms and using the weapons and language that would have been used a century ago.

In this centenary year, the Battle of the Somme is a key focus for the group – but they also talk about the personal impact of the First World War on society and families in Scotland.

Some of the team are civilians, some military, but they all have the same goal.

Whether it's telling the story of the Scottish Women's Hospitals, or of the 32,000 Americans who served in the British Expeditionary Force, they all have a passion for explaining history.

As the First World War centenary events continue, this group are likely to be pretty busy for the next two years - but they say they'll keep using their talks to give a special insight into times gone by.
